Discouraged With Writing?

4/27/2016

This past year I have struggled with whether to write or not. I often feel discouraged and wonder if I can ever succeed. All writers go through times like this, and Kristen Lamb hit the nail on the head on her blog. Take a look and see if you relate to her words. My final word, I will continue to write because I can't imagine not writing no matter the journey.

Keep writing.

Record Personal History

Much to the chagrin of children, parents often tell what their own childhood was like compared to what children enjoy now. While we remember the good and bad of our childhood, our audience wonders how we survived without all the electronic gadgets, computers, fancy appliances, or instant gratification of fast food, all of which control our lives today.
Our present day younger citizens will likely own cars that drive themselves, but few can remember when owning a car at all was really a big deal. (Think first house on the block to own a car.) While that was before my time too, I do remember our family’s first telephone, our first TV, and other firsts that children can't imagine not being around since the beginning of time. (That's why they think we're older than dirt.) If earlier generations were told that we would go into space someday, I’m sure they wouldn’t believe it, any more than the following generation might think we could live on another planet. Although, that thought is changing fast too. I felt the same way about my parents and their stories about growing up.
But, isn't that how we pass on actual events in history and our roots? While small children may not be that interested in our stories now, as they grow up they begin to ask about their family's past and all the stories that go with it. Let's keep those opportunities open. Tape or film conversations with your parents or grandparents to pass on to your children and grandchildren. You might even write a book about family stories. They in turn can pass it on to their children. It is a way of preserving personal family history and an accurate reflection on how life used to be way back when.

See you next time.

MANIFESTO

One of the first things I learned after completing my coursework was, whether or not you are published you are a writer. Difficult as it was to say this to people, after a few practice runs I adjusted and proudly wore the badge of “writer”.

After a few years of writing, learning the ropes, etc., people stopped asking me how my writing was going. I guess they thought I should have a book out already and bringing in the dough. Those who don't write do not understand how difficult it is to produce a quality manuscript, let alone break into the market.

Let’s face it, some writers have great talent and their journey is shorter than mine, but I’ve heard too that many established authors tell stories about their multiple rejections before getting it right. And, by multiple, I mean 50 to 100 submissions, give or take a few.

Fortunately, I saw this "manifesto" on Katie Weiland’s post which she allowed me to post on my blog. It really says a lot about embracing writing. So without further ado, here it is.

     See you next time.
